Tournament Overview Host: Malaysia Dates: June 15–21, 2025 Venue: National Hockey Stadium, Kuala Lumpur Participating Teams 🇫🇷 France 🇯🇵 Japan 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇳🇿 New Zealand 🇵🇰 Pakistan 🇿🇦 South Africa 🏴 Wales 🇲🇾 Malaysia (Host) The Nations Cup is divided into two pools. Each team plays against every other team in their pool. The top two teams from each pool advance to the semifinals, leading to the final match that determines the champion. The winner of the tournament earns a spot in the 2025–26 FIH Hockey Pro League. Pool A 🇫🇷 France 🇰🇷 South Korea 🇿🇦 South Africa 🏴 Wales Pool B 🇯🇵 Japan 🇳🇿 New Zealand 🇵🇰 Pakistan 🇲🇾 Malaysia (Host) Team Profiles New Zealand New Zealand, ranked 12th in the world, won the 2023/24 FIH Hockey Nations Cup and earned a promotion to the 2024/2025 FIH Pro League. They have a history of competing in the Olympics and World Cups and are often considered an upsetter in such tournaments. The Nations Cup is crucial for New Zealand to maintain their global rankings and ensure they continue to play competitive hockey at the highest levels through a potential return to the Pro League. South Africa South Africa, ranked 11th in the world and the top team in Africa, finished 3rd place in the 2023/24 Nations Cup. Their dominance in continental competitions is well established, but breaking into the top international tier remains a challenge. They participated in the 2023 World Cup and showed flashes of brilliance despite limited resources. The Nations Cup is a key opportunity for South Africa to bridge the gap between regional dominance and global competitiveness. A strong showing here would help them gain more visibility and perhaps secure Pro League participation. Pakistan Pakistan, ranked 15th in the world, marks a significant chapter in its attempt to re-establish itself as a force in international hockey. Pakistan has struggled in recent decades due to declining domestic support, infrastructure issues, and inconsistent international performances. Although their current world ranking is outside the top 10, this tournament offers Pakistan a valuable opportunity to rebuild its reputation and challenge stronger teams. It’s also their chance to qualify for the FIH Pro League. Pakistan finished 4th place in the 2023/24 Nations Cup, and 7th in the 2022 Nations Cup. France France, ranked 9th in the world, enters the tournament as one of the top contenders. They bring a well-balanced squad, combining youthful energy and experienced leadership. France will be aiming not only to maintain their top-10 status but to win the Nations Cup. France finished 5th place in the 2022 Nations Cup and are set to participate in the upcoming tournament. Japan Japan, currently 16th in the FIH world rankings, is one of the most technically disciplined teams in the competition. Japan also participated in the 2022 Men’s FIH Hockey Nations Cup. Japan is no stranger to high-pressure international hockey. Their goal in the Nations Cup will be to confirm their status as one of the top Asian teams and to qualify for the Pro League. Korea South Korea, ranked 14th globally, is another experienced Asian team with a strong legacy, especially in the early 2000s when they reached the Olympic finals. Korea finished 6th place in the 2023/24 Nations Cup. Korea has consistently performed well in the Asian Games. Their ability to play structured, defensively sound hockey allows them to compete closely with higher-ranked teams. Malaysia Malaysia, ranked 13th and serving as the host nation, carries both the advantage of home support and the pressure of expectations. Malaysian hockey has seen heavy investment and development in recent years. Malaysia finished 7th place in the 2023/24 Nations Cup. They will look to capitalize on their home conditions and crowd support to deliver a strong showing. For Malaysia, the tournament is not only a competition but a showcase of how far they’ve progressed and a springboard to qualify for the Pro League. Wales Wales, ranked 18th, is the lowest-ranked team in this tournament but has been steadily improving in recent years. Their qualification for the 2023 World Cup and solid outings show they are on an upward path. Wales finished 11th place in the 2023 World Cup. Their goal in the Nations Cup will be to cause upsets, gain experience, and prove they can compete with better-ranked nations.
