Sultan Johor Cup 2025: A Crucial Test Ahead of the Junior Hockey World Cup

The Sultan Johor Cup is an annual international men’s under-21 field hockey tournament, held in Johor, Malaysia.

The Sultan Johor Cup 2025 edition will be played from October 11 to 18. It will feature the top 6 junior talented teams around the globe, providing teams with valuable match experience ahead of the Junior Hockey World Cup.

The Junior Hockey World Cup is scheduled from November 28 to December 10, 2025. It will be featuring the top 6 junior talented teams around the globe.

This year’s tournament will feature six teams, all competing in a single pool:

🇦🇺 Australia
 🇮🇳 India
🇲🇾 Malaysia
🇵🇰 Pakistan
🇬🇧 Great Britain
🇳🇿 New Zealand

The competition will accompany a round robin format, meaning that each squad plays against every other team one time during the grouping stage.

Points are awarded for wins and draws, and the teams with the highest points at the end of this phase will proceed to the final or classification matches.

Furthermore, this format ensures that every team faces all opponents, giving a fair chance to prove their strength over multiple games rather than a single knockout match

This makes the Sultan of Johor Cup not only an honored contest in its own right but also a critical prep stage for the globe’s top juniors team.

Since its first appearance in 2011, it has become one of the most honored youth competitions in the sport, often serving as a proving ground for the next stars of international hockey.

Over the years, five different teams have lifted the coveted trophy. Great Britain stands as the most successful side in the tournament’s history, with four championships to their name.

India followed closely with three titles, while Australia and Germany have each triumphed double. Host nation Malaysia has also enjoyed success, having claimed the title once.

Its last defending champion is Great Britain who defeated Australia 6-4.

The bronze medal went to India as they defeated New Zealand
